Screening of ‘Roxanne’ launches free events at Two River Theater

One of my Top 10 favorite plays — “Cyrano de Bergerac” —   opens the Two River Theater Company’s 26th season beginning next month.

But the pre-play festivities begin much earlier in Red Bank, NJ. Tonight, as a matter of fact, with a free screening of the film “Roxanne,” an 1987 adaptation of the classic 1897 play by Edmond Rostand .

More than a dozen movies have been based on the the Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac, a  French novelist, playwright, epistolarian and duelist.

Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah in “Roxanne.”

The romantic comedy stars  Steve Martin as  C.D.  Bales, who is in love with the beautiful Roxanne, played by Daryl Hannah , who is in love with the handsome Chris, played by  Rick Rossovich.

The NYTimes called it a “thoroughly charming performance,.
